Healthy for the Holidays

Seasonal Eating Swaps

written by rebecca poole

When you think of a typical holiday meal, things like stuffing, casserole, pie, and eggnog probably come to mind. The word nutritious isn’t usually associated with seasonal foods, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be. If you’re aiming to keep up a healthy lifestyle or simply want to start anew, there are alternatives for optimizing positive habits during this busy time of year.

  • For when you need a dip for the veggie tray
You dip once, then twice, then … three times, and, before you know it, you’ve consumed hundreds of calories before you even get to the main course. Many store-bought dips contain a multitude of unhealthy fats and other no-good ingredients. Make the switch to Greek yogurt-based dips (either homemade or store-bought) that still taste good but won’t do as much damage to your waistline.

  • For when you still want stuffing on the table
You may think that stuffing isn’t the same without cubes of white bread, but there are plenty of healthy alternatives you can try. Make your own twist on the signature side dish by making this farro forager stuffing—a healthier alternative that contains flavor and fiber.

  • For when you want something to sip on
A cup of (nonalcoholic) eggnog can contain up to 350 calories—nearly half of those from fat—and almost 22 grams of sugar. Not exactly a healthy “cheers!” Stick to red wine, which typically contains about 125 calories per five-ounce glass and around one gram of sugar. If you still want something sweeter, a flute of prosecco only contains about 120 calories.

  • For when you still want cranberry sauce as a side dish
Think twice before grabbing a can of cranberry sauce at the grocery store. Many kinds are filled with added sugars and corn syrup that could be avoided if you make your own. Even if a recipe calls for a lot of sugar, you can always cut back or replace with a sugar substitute, like maple syrup or stevia.

  • For when you still want a creamy side dish
Mashed potatoes is a staple side dish on most holiday tables, but it isn’t exactly the healthiest option (especially if you’re trying to watch your carb intake). Swap potatoes with cauliflower to make a dish that’s still full of flavor, just with a more nutritious twist. This creamy cauliflower recipe is just what your table needs this season.
