Peri-Peri Chicken Shawarma

This spicy and savory grilled chicken dish is easy to prepare and can be ready in less than thirty minutes. It’s a healthy, flavorful version of the classic chicken shawarma—packed with veggies, yogurt, and wrapped in a warm, toasty pita.

Pick your favorite vegetables, and don’t feel limited to those included in the recipe. This is an enjoyable dish you can easily customize to your taste.

Serves 4

Ingredients:
  • 4 whole-wheat pitas


Ingredients for chicken:
  • 1 tbsp. olive oil
  • 1 lemon, juiced
  • 1 tsp. paprika
  • ½ tsp. dried oregano
  • ½ tsp. garlic powder
  • ½ tsp. onion powder
  • ½ tsp. cayenne or peri-peri pepper powder
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • ¼ tsp. ground ginger
  • 1½ lb. boneless skinless chicken breast, diced


Toppings:
  • 1 c. tomato, diced
  • 1 c. cucumber, diced
  • ¼ c. red onion, peeled and diced
  • 1 c. parsley, chopped
  • Feta cheese, for sprinkling


Ingredients for sauce:
  • ¼ c. nonfat Greek yogurt
  • 1 tbsp. low-fat sour cream
  • 1 tsp. fresh dill
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • ¼ tsp. black pepper


Print Recipe
  1. In a large bowl, whisk together olive oil, lemon juice, paprika, oregano, garlic powder, onion powder, peri-peri pepper powder, salt, and ginger. Toss marinade with diced chicken, and refrigerate for a minimum of two hours.
  2. Preheat grill to medium-high heat. Place the chicken on skewers, and grill for 4–5 minutes per side or until thoroughly cooked. Remove chicken from the skewers, and keep warm until ready to serve.
  3. While chicken is cooking, toss together tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, and parsley in a large bowl. Keep refrigerated until ready to serve.
  4. Whisk together yogurt, sour cream, dill, salt, and pepper until smooth. Keep refrigerated until ready to serve.
  5. To serve, warm pitas on the grill, and open the pockets. Fill with chicken, toppings, and sauce.
