Gear Up for a Great Getaway

Setting Up Your Home for Vacation

written by matthew brady

Vacation is something that we all look forward to, but it’s also important to make sure your home is safe. Some preplanning can give you peace of mind—allowing you to relax while you're away.

  • Shut ‘em down.
If you don’t have surge protectors, unplug devices such as computers and televisions. This can not only help protect the appliances but also prevent damage in the event of a surge. If you do have a surge protector, simply turn it off or unplug it.

  • Purchase a fire safety box.
Place all your most precious valuables and important documents in a fire safety box for added protection.

  • #

  • Check the batteries.
Another key fire protection measure is to check all the batteries in your smoke detectors, which are crucial for early fire detection—and your neighbors can likely hear them to alert the fire department.

  • Ax the AC.
If you live in a warm climate, consider turning off your air conditioner or leaving it set at eighty-five degrees. There’s no need to keep it running unless you have pets.

  • #

  • Rely on others.
Ask a trusted neighbor or family member to keep your spare key and collect your mail and newspaper. If there’s a problem, they’ll have easier access to your home. Plus, this will eliminate surefire signs that you’re not home. (You can also schedule a hold with the USPS and your newspaper.)

  • Utilize a controllable timer.
Consider purchasing controllable/wireless timers to turn on and off lights, which gives the impression that you are still home.

  • Don't post photos just yet.
Though it may be tempting to share photos in real time, thieves often scan social media looking for people who will be away. Wait until you’re home to share your photos and updates.

  • Check … and check again.
Don’t be that person who suddenly realizes on vacation that the kitchen window was left open. Double-check all doors and windows to ensure they are locked securely before leaving for your trip.
