Grow A Better Garden

Spruce Up the Outside

If you have the space for it, maintaining a traditional outdoor garden can be a highly rewarding activity that adds major curb appeal to your home. These tips can help anyone (even those lacking a green thumb) achieve the garden of his or her dreams.

Go chemical free
It’s completely possible to grow strong plants without the use of pesticides and other chemicals. To keep bugs at bay, fill a spray bottle most of the way full with warm water, and add just a tablespoon of peppermint oil. For rodents, rabbits, and other backyard critters, a garlic-pepper spray will do the trick. Simply add half a cup of red chili peppers, ten to twelve garlic cloves, and two cups of water to a blender. Strain into a bowl, mix in one cup of cooking oil, and let stand for a couple days before spraying onto vegetables, fruits, or herbs; avoid spraying directly before or after a rain shower. You can spray both of these mixtures directly onto the plant. (TIP: Be sure to thoroughly wash hands after handling, as the mixture can be irritating.)

Avoid overwatering or underwatering
Plants and flowers can be finicky, so it’s important to achieve just the right balance when watering them. Allow the top inch of soil to dry before watering again, and any plants in containers should have adequate drainage (holes at the bottom of the pot should work just fine) to prevent fungus growth.

Attract pollinators
Nature is excellent at taking care of itself, and a garden will thrive best when pollinators like bees and butterflies have access to it. Make sure to include plants and flowers native to your area—especially those with bright colors. Local nurseries should be able to help you pick out the right types for your garden.

Tag your plants and flowers
Some varieties of plants, flowers, and herbs can look very similar, so to make sure you’re caring for them properly, it’s important to identify them correctly. Using plant markers, like these fun homemade ones, can help you make sure your garden gets the attention it needs.
