A Staycation to Remember

Gather Round the Campfire

written by rebecca poole

Sure, there’s fun to be had when it comes to planning a family camping trip—from researching a campground to thinking up outdoor activities to creating a packing list—but don’t underestimate how enjoyable creating a similar experience in your own backyard can be.

  • Pitch your tent
Now’s the time to go into your garage and dust off your camping tent. If you don’t already have one, REI, Amazon, and L.L. Bean have great options for whatever kind you’re looking for. Make sure to pitch it on as smooth a spot as possible.

  • Set up the inside of your tent
Make sure it’s equipped with everything you would need for an overnight stay—just as you would if you were really at a campground. Sleeping bags (or an air mattress), bug repellent, pillows, blankets, and warm pajamas (yes, even during the summer) are essential. To really create a whimsical ambience, incorporate lanterns or hang up string lights around the inside of your tent. Don’t forget a flashlight for telling ghost stories!

    Campfire Tips

What’s a backyard camping experience without sitting around a fire roasting s’mores? Heed these safety tips to make the most of your time outdoors*:

    • Campfires should be at least twenty-five feet away from your home. Make sure to also build it away from any overhanging branches.
    • Less is more—keep your campfire small to avoid any disasters.
    • Never leave the campfire unattended.
    • Burns should be treated as soon as they happen. Treat the burn with cold water for three to five minutes before covering with a dry cloth. Seek medical attention if needed.
    • Supervise children at all times, including when roasting marshmallows.

*Confirm with your local fire department whether campfires are permitted before setting one up.

  • Make s’mores
Gone are the days of a simple chocolate and marshmallow s’more. While there’s nothing wrong with the classic, these renditions are sure to spice up the staple fireside treat. To make, roast a marshmallow to your liking, and place on a graham cracker square with one of the tasty additions below. Top with another graham cracker square, and enjoy!

    • Salted caramel: caramel square, sea salt
    • Peanut butter: Reese’s cup
    • Tropical: Mounds bar
    • Spiced hot chocolate: milk chocolate bar, cinnamon, nutmeg
