When the Bell Rings
Easy Eats
Long gone are the days of boring microwave noodles and cold pizza. Dorm room eating doesn’t have to mean sacrificing nutrition or the five basic food groups. If you’re worried about your favorite undergrad’s eating habits, suggest one of these easy upgrades to college classics.
Breakfast Ramen
Ramen for breakfast? Protein-packed eggs and a little bacon for good measure means this is a totally feasible option for a quick bite before that 8:00 a.m. exam.
Ingredients
- Bacon, cooked and crumbled
- Chicken-flavored ramen
- 1 egg
- Chives
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- American cheese, shredded
Print Recipe
- Cook the bacon to your preferred level of crispiness, crumble, and set aside.
- Break up the ramen noodles slightly, and cook according to package instructions. While the noodles are cooking, soft boil the egg, and cut it in half.
- Top the cooked ramen with the egg, crumbled bacon, chives, shredded cheese, salt, and pepper.
Spicy Shrimp Ramen
This meal will feel like a luxury compared to the cafeteria food, and shrimp can easily be swapped for something a little less expensive, like chicken, or left out entirely.
Ingredients
- 2 cups chicken broth
- Shrimp-flavored ramen
- 2 ounces white mushrooms, sliced thin
- 2 tablespoons hot sauce
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 5–10 shrimp, cooked
- Green onions, chopped
Print Recipe
- Bring the chicken broth to a boil, and add in the ramen noodles.
- Halfway through cooking, add the mushrooms, hot sauce, sesame oil, and salt and pepper to taste.
- Continue to cook until noodles are soft. Pour into a bowl, and top with the shrimp and green onions.
