According to Feeding America, one in seven Americans is reliant on food banks—a statistic that is particularly hard to comprehend during the holiday season. The Feeding America network, which includes two-hundred food banks across the country, is always in need of volunteers and donations but is particularly wanting during the holidays. If you’re looking to make an impact this season, donating your time or goods to a local food bank is a great way to help thousands of people in your area. It’s not always easy to tell who is in need, but it is easy to make a difference. Start by putting together a donation box with some or all of these items:
Fruits and Veggies
- ☐ Canned vegetables (low sodium): peas, green beans, potatoes, carrots, beets, corn
- ☐ Canned fruit (light syrup): peaches, pineapples, pears, apricots
- ☐ Dried fruit: apples, plums, grapes, strawberries
- ☐ Spaghetti sauce
- ☐ Fruit juice
- ☐ Low-sodium soups
Grains
- ☐ Pasta
- ☐ Cereal
- ☐ Rice and quinoa
- ☐ Oatmeal
- ☐ Nuts and seeds
- ☐ Macaroni and cheese (or other boxed meals)
Proteins
- ☐ Peanut butter (or other nut butters)
- ☐ Beans
- ☐ Canned chicken, tuna, or salmon
Miscellaneous
- ☐ Cooking oils: canola, vegetable, olive
- ☐ Honey
- ☐ Broths and stock: chicken, beef
- ☐ Dried or canned milk
- ☐ Baby food, cereal, and formula
