A Walk in the (Water) Park

Safe and Soaked

written by matthew brady

Sure, water can be enjoyable—but it can also be hazardous. This may seem self-evident, but you can never be too cautious at a large, water-filled location. So consider these safety tips before you head out on your water park adventure.

Safe and Soaked

  • Be alert. Make sure that small children and weak swimmers always wear life jackets (not water wings), which are usually complimentary at water parks. Also, when you arrive at a water attraction, make sure to take note of where lifeguards are located. However, even with these precautions, your vigilance should be constant—children can have trouble swimming in shallow water, even with a life jacket on, so every minute of your attention matters.

  • Sign Up! Usually there are signs posted near bodies of water where people are likely swimming or gathering for fun. So be sure to read posted warnings and safety rules before allowing your kids to go on rides or dive in head-first. And don’t be afraid to ask questions if anything is unclear. Remember: ultimately, your family’s safety is your responsibility.

  • Safe and Soaked

Know your limits. In the midst of having a splashing good time, you (and especially your kids) may not want it to ever end—and here's where dangers can lurk. If fatigue sets in, make sure to take a break. If you see telltale signs of your children being cold, such as purple lips or chattering teeth, round them up and bundle them up in towels. And remember that if you’re exposed to the sun at the water park, you’ll have to reapply sunscreen more frequently.

  • Stay healthy. Kids are adventurous, and that may mean wanting to drink the pool water. But considering the chemicals and potential contaminants, you should instruct them not to (nor to open their eyes underwater, for that matter). And, if you have kids who aren’t potty-trained, make sure that they’re wearing plastic swim diapers so you—and the other swimmers—don’t have a disaster on your hands.

Help your friends and family stay safe at water parks this summer by sharing these must-have safety tips.

Thank You
