Why We Do Spring–Cleaning
For many of us, when spring arrives so does our desire to do some home cleaning. But what's so special about spring that makes us want to make the house spick‐and‐span? As it turns out, there are several reasons why this task is tied to the season.
It's traditional.
When we were young, we likely watched our parents perform this ritual every spring (and heard about how they watched their parents do it). We were also probably compelled to help or at least told to stay out of the way. Spring‐cleaning is therefore ingrained in many of us as something important, so we do it as well.
It's biological.
People are creatures of habit, and spring‐cleaning is certainly a healthy habit for many. Beyond that, spring ushers in longer days and more sunshine. So, whereas we get more lethargic in winter, our melatonin decreases with more sunshine, and this gets us moving. Spring‐cleaning isn't solely a North American phenomenon, either. In other countries, such as Israel, China, and Iran, customs and holidays are based on spring‐cleaning.
It's practical.
Back in the day, dirt and grime would build up from constantly using coal or oil as heat over the long winters. Nowadays, pollutants may be fewer, but they still can accumulate indoors during the winter. In addition, things like mold, dirt, dander, and dust (with dust mites) build up—and cleaning everything with the windows open does wonders for refreshing both the air and the spirit.
It's personal.
There's something satisfying about getting your house in tip‐top shape, but especially for spring. People are out and about (coming out of a hibernation of sorts), and that means more visitors—and more reasons to have a clean home.
It's inspirational.
Like New Year's, spring‐cleaning is a time for a do‐over, but with warmer weather. It's ultimately about rebirth, with open blinds, open windows, and open doors. It's a breath of fresh air and cleaning the slate—literally and figuratively—compelling us to make the most of Mother Nature's return and embrace all life has to offer.
