Peri-Peri Chicken Shawarma
This spicy and savory grilled chicken dish is easy to prepare and can be ready in less than thirty minutes. It’s a healthy, flavorful version of the classic chicken shawarma—packed with veggies, yogurt, and wrapped in a warm, toasty pita.
Pick your favorite vegetables, and don’t feel limited to those included in the recipe. This is an enjoyable dish you can easily customize to your taste.
Serves 4
Ingredients:
- 4 whole-wheat pitas
Ingredients for chicken:
- 1 tbsp. olive oil
- 1 lemon, juiced
- 1 tsp. paprika
- ½ tsp. dried oregano
- ½ tsp. garlic powder
- ½ tsp. onion powder
- ½ tsp. cayenne or peri-peri pepper powder
- 1 tsp. salt
- ¼ tsp. ground ginger
- 1½ lb. boneless skinless chicken breast, diced
Toppings:
- 1 c. tomato, diced
- 1 c. cucumber, diced
- ¼ c. red onion, peeled and diced
- 1 c. parsley, chopped
- Feta cheese, for sprinkling
Ingredients for sauce:
- ¼ c. nonfat Greek yogurt
- 1 tbsp. low-fat sour cream
- 1 tsp. fresh dill
- ½ tsp. salt
- ¼ tsp. black pepper

- In a large bowl, whisk together olive oil, lemon juice, paprika, oregano, garlic powder, onion powder, peri-peri pepper powder, salt, and ginger. Toss marinade with diced chicken, and refrigerate for a minimum of two hours.
- Preheat grill to medium-high heat. Place the chicken on skewers, and grill for 4–5 minutes per side or until thoroughly cooked. Remove chicken from the skewers, and keep warm until ready to serve.
- While chicken is cooking, toss together tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, and parsley in a large bowl. Keep refrigerated until ready to serve.
- Whisk together yogurt, sour cream, dill, salt, and pepper until smooth. Keep refrigerated until ready to serve.
- To serve, warm pitas on the grill, and open the pockets. Fill with chicken, toppings, and sauce.
