  • A car emergency kit
Many people have a glove box overflowing with random knickknacks and gadgets (and hopefully some important paperwork). And while most people know there are actual essentials you should always keep in your vehicle, many of us don’t actually have an emergency kit. Whether you’re planning a cross-country trip or a drive down the street, this is something you should put together today. Here are some standbys you should always include:

    • Extra cash
    • Tire-pressure gauge
    • Phone charger
    • First aid kit
    • Funnel
    • Flashlight
    • Jumper cables
    • Wrench/pliers
    • Water
    • Owner’s manual

  • Heat protection
Is there anything worse than getting into a car that’s been baking in the sun all day? It practically pulls the air out of your lungs and the skin right off the back of your legs. Instead of suffering, try these solutions:

    1. Keep windows cracked slightly to allow for airflow—just make sure there are no storms on the horizon.
    2. Roll down one of your windows, and use the opposite-side door as a giant fan, moving it back and forth to bring new air into a parked car.
    3. Park in a shady a spot, preferably under a tree or, even better, in a garage.
    4. Your instinct might be to blast the air the minute you get in, but try to refrain. Driving with the windows open briefly before using the AC helps cool your car and allows your air conditioner to run more efficiently.
