Say Hello to Summer

Backyard Basics

written by alexa bricker

No matter the size of your backyard, everyone wants to be able to enjoy this space during the summer months. Unfortunately, the season can bring a lot of hidden dangers, so it’s important to prepare before you set up shop with a lawn chair and a glass of lemonade.

  • Protect your pets
You want your pets to enjoy the outdoors as much as you do, so make sure to remove any potentially harmful plants or weeds in your yard, such as daffodils, ivy, milkweed, and azaleas. You should also always make sure your pets have an adequate water supply. If you have a fence, be sure to scan the perimeter for weak spots your pup could dig through.

  • Guard the grill
If you plan to do any grilling, make sure the grill is placed away from the home (at least ten feet) and that you never leave it unattended. It’s also important to supervise children and pets. If cooking meat, ensure it reaches the proper internal temperature (160°F for burgers, 165°F for chicken, 145°F for fish).

  • Don’t feed the flames
Gathering around a backyard firepit is a quintessential part of summer for many families, but a small fire can quickly get out of control if proper precautions aren’t taken. Never leave the fire unattended, and make sure there is a shovel and plenty of water present to help put out the fire. Don’t burn trash or other waste, as it could be harmful to you and the environment.

  • Dodge danger in the garden
Your garden should be a relaxing space, not a hazardous one. Make sure your skin is protected from both the sun and from potentially harmful plants and bugs by using sunscreen and wearing long-sleeved clothing, long pants, and a hat. Be sure to keep plenty of water on hand, and try and head back inside before the hottest part of the afternoon.
