Vacations aren’t exclusive to summer alone—why not dust off your suitcase and neck pillow and plan a getaway for winter as well? No matter the forecast, sometimes what you need is a vacation on the calendar that lets you escape the humdrum of everyday life. Based on region, these are some getaways that will make for one exciting winter season. No seasonal blues here!

  • NORTHEAST
If you want a true taste of winter, head to the Northeast, where you’re sure to experience a snowfall or two. The Catskills in upstate New York provide ample opportunity for snow-centric activities both on and off the mountain. You can try snowshoeing tours, scenic hiking trails for both novices and pros, and cross-country skiing.

Burlington, Vermont, is a classic New England destination with some of the best slopes the country has to offer. This getaway is the epitome of a winter-wonderland escape—from the fresh-powder mountains to the hot chocolate fireplace cafés scattered throughout this charming city.

Mardi Gras isn’t for everybody, but for those who want to experience this annual spectacle, put New Orleans on your radar this winter. Whether or not you go specifically for the party of the year, there are plenty of other reasons to head to NOLA—history around every corner, steamboat tours during the day and jazz shows at night, and all of the charm the French Quarter has waiting for you.

    MIDWEST
When you think of winter and the Midwest, Chicago is probably one of the first places that comes to mind—and maybe not for the most idyllic reasons. The Windy City has its name for a reason, after all. But with locals flocking to warmer parts of the world and tourists opting for sunnier spots for a winter getaway, this time of year can actually be a great time to visit Chicago. Ice-skate in one of the many rinks throughout the city (Millennium Park is one of the best), visit the theater to enjoy a musical or a play, stroll along Michigan Avenue for a one-of-a-kind shopping experience, and take in all the architectural glory of this historic city.

  • SOUTHWEST
Sante Fe, New Mexico, remains a hidden gem during the winter season. While most people are flocking to more popular places in this part of the country, like Sedona or Phoenix, others are all too keen to experience the magic of Sante Fe. Winter festivals take over the city, healing mineral water hot springs await you at the Sunrise Springs resort, and the pristine slopes are ready for skiiers who are eager to experience the Sante Fe trails.

  • WEST
For those aiming to escape the winter chill, San Diego, California, is just the destination to do so. Temperatures average in the mid-70s, so you’ll avoid the scorching sun while still enjoying pleasant walks on the beach. Head to La Jolla to spot a seal or sea lion, and continue on to one of the surrounding top-notch Mexican restaurants for tostadas and a refreshing margarita.
