Small plants like herbs are the perfect variety to grow in an apartment or any other small living space. They can brighten up the place and add a pleasant aroma, and they’re a great way to add flavor to your favorite recipes yourself—without having to spend extra money at the grocery store.

This herb will grow best in a deep pot due to its long taproot. It also needs to be near a window that allows light for at least six hours per day. The soil should be kept moist.

If you don’t have much experience growing herbs, basil is one of the easiest to care for. Make sure basil gets at least six hours of sunlight a day. Keep the soil moist and pay attention to the leaves, which can wilt from both too much or too little water.

This fast-growing plant also needs about six hours of daily sunlight. During the summer or in warmer climates, however, cilantro also needs shade during the hottest part of the day. Keep the soil moist, watering when the top of the soil is dry.

Extra tips:

  • Plant herbs in planters with sufficient drainage, and avoid watering them at night to prevent fungus growth.

  • For herbs that benefit from fertilizer, consider an organic version to keep the soil nutrient dense.

  • Most herbs need lots of light, so it’s important to place them in a sunny spot in your home, like a southern-facing window.
