An Adventure-Filled August

Last-Second Summer Getaways

written by matthew brady

With August upon us, it’s time to gear up for one final summer adventure! Fortunately, America is crammed full of interesting places to visit, and one of them is sure to be within driving distance for a fun weekend escape. Here are a few fascinating areas to consider for your end-of-summer travel plans.

  • Annapolis, MD
This historic harbor town, known as “America’s Sailing Capital,” is just south of Baltimore and offers plenty to do on a long weekend. See for yourself what all the hype is about by planning a boat excursion, eating all the seafood your heart desires, or peeking into one of the many family-owned shops lining the cobblestone streets for one jam-packed weekend.

  • Myrtle Beach, SC
If a weekend beach trip is calling your name one last time this summer, it’s hard to beat Myrtle Beach. From the warm, crystal-clear water and white sand of the Grand Strand to the shopping, shows, and fun attractions at the iconic Broadway at the Beach complex, it’s the perfect “so much to do and so little time” destination.

  • Minneapolis-Saint Paul, MN
Between its many parks, lakes, and landmarks, Minneapolis-Saint Paul provides an endless array of outdoor adventures, including the Minnesota State Fair: a 160-year-old event that draws over two million people over the twelve days leading up to and including Labor Day. And, of course, for indoor fun in the Twin Cities, the Mall of America is a must-see.

  • Saint Louis, MO
A baseball game here, a rooftop bar there—that’s really all you need for a summer weekend away, right? Saint Louis is home to many staples, including Forest Park (named the best urban park in America by USA Today), a world-renowned art museum, and some exquisite American fare in the Delmar Loop.

  • Pacific Coast Highway, CA
Nothing says “long weekend trip” quite like a road trip along one of the country’s most picturesque routes. The entirety of the Pacific Coast Highway (Route 1) may not be feasible in just a couple of days, but a few notable stops are worth the drive, such as at Point Dume State Beach in Malibu, or, if you’re farther north, visit San Francisco’s Sutro Baths.
