A Picture-Perfect Season

Dinner Is Served

written by alexa bricker

Now that you’ve mastered your family photo, it’s finally time to eat. But wait … your uncles are fighting over who gets to sit closest to the cranberry sauce, and your mom accidentally grabbed your glass because it was on the wrong side of the plate!

There are a lot of rules when it comes to setting the perfect table, so it can be easy to forget a few key pieces. Thankfully, the Norman Rockwell table setting of your dreams is possible to achieve. These solutions, plus printable name and tent cards, can transform your table into something straight out of a Hallmark holiday movie.

The Essentials

#

Everything has its place at the table, but with so much to do, it can be hard to know what goes where. These are the basics to keep in mind:

  • Chargers
It’s easy to elevate your holiday table beyond the everyday place setting by adding a charger—a larger, decorative plate—underneath each entrée plate.

  • Utensils
Forks should be placed on the left side of the plate, with the first fork used on the outside. The knife and spoon belong to the right of the plate, with the knife on the inside.

  • Glasses
Water glasses should be placed to the upper right side of the plate, followed by the wine glasses in the order they will be used.

  • Napkins
Napkins can be folded any way you like and can be placed either on each entrée plate or under each fork.

Decorating the Table

#

When it comes to decorating your table, there are a number of ways you can incorporate pieces that are well suited for both fall and winter celebrations. Here are just a few suggestions:

  • Colors
A neutral-colored runner or place mats, such as creams and whites, allow for bolder colors in decor and tableware. Use reds or metallic colors for napkins, garland, and table toppers, which look good throughout the holiday season.

  • Centerpieces and garland
Use decor that reflects the outside environment. Leaves and branches are a great option for fall holidays, while pine cones and cranberries or other dark fruits look lovely in winter. Subtle hints of the season, such as pine branches, ornaments, and gourds are another great option to place on the table.

  • Tableware
You have the opportunity to go big with tableware by incorporating a bright color scheme or even varying the colors of the plates, cups, and napkins if you’d like. For example, alternate between red and white plates, with opposite-colored napkins. Instead of plain silverware, using other options like gold can add an unexpected but tasteful touch.
